A couple of months ago my husband came home with a few FREE items ( a couple of which are still sitting on my front porch). The table pictured below was one of the items. It need a few minor repairs and a clean up but I was excited to start on the project to see what we could come up with.

For awhile I have been wanting to hang our farm emblem up in our house. I wasn't sure what would be the best thing to use. With the table above I knew I wanted to make a ottoman with the lower half so I decided to use the top as a base for the emblem.
My husband disassembled it for me and repaired the top and the broken leg. I believe he can fix just about anything! The top of table I used as a base for my Farm emblem and attached a staind 2X4 with shelving brackets, which I found at a local craft store!

I firsted started out with a flat, red, spray paint. My husband used two coats to get full coverage. After letting it dry over night I used an interior flat paint, radiant teal velveteen. I coated the paint brush lightly and started in the middle to get a more uniformed look. After going over the entire thing i dry brushed it to get the weathered look. I haven't added a clear coat yet but I will in the near future to protect the image. After letting everything dry my husband screwed the board to the brackets and then the brackets to the table top. We used picture frame wire and eye let screws to hang it. Because of the weight, we did screw it to a stud.
This could have easily just become a shelving base ( which was my original idea for it) or a giant wall clock... the possiblities are endless.
Ok, on to the bottom half of the table........
My husband continued to disassemble the table by taking the dowel rods out as well as the center piece ( hopefully I can come up for a use for them as well). I cleaned the table with my homemade furniture wood polish ( I'll have a later entry on how to make your own).

See nice and shiny......

On to making the ottoman.....
My husband cut out two circles, the same size as the table top, from plywood, to add some more support and sturdiness. For the cushioning I used a couple of pieces of old mattress foam we had left ( I'm into reusing ALOT) as well as some polyester stuffing. I picked out some fabric that I thought would contrast well with the dark wood and few buttons to add to it! I cut out my fabric, being careful to count for the depth of cushioning and the plywood. I then pinned the fabric to the mattress foam (which would be attached to the plywood later) and began adding the stuffing. After getting an idea where the center would be, we added the buttons with some needle and thread. After finishing the buttons, we careful unpinned the fabric from the padding to add the plywood circles. Using a slap stapler, my husband stabled around the sides making sure the fabric was pulled just right (this is what took us the majority of the two hours to assemble the ottoman. NOTE TO SELF: BUY NEW SLAP STAPLER)! After an hour, and one irrated husband , we screwed the finished cushion securely to the table top. To do this we flipped the table over so the cushion top rested on the floor. Vance screwed several screws through the underside of the table.
The finished product......

Absolutley LOVE the fabric

All materials included it cost me a little over $30 to make a really nice ottoman! I love coming up with new ideas!!
