Chickens and eggs have been in the news a lot lately along with funny memes, posts, and articles! Most people associate chickens and their eggs to just merely a food source but they are so much more!

As far as eggs we tend to think about the inside rather than considering the value of the shell! That part typically makes it to the trash or compost! But in hindsight we're throwing out a useful part!

Calcium carbonate is an important mineral that makes up the majority of an eggshell. There is about 800 mg of calcium in just 1 teaspoon of eggshell powder. Making this powder is SUPER EASY and SIMPLE! Save up egg shells until you have a couple of quart jars full.

  1. Wash eggs IMMEDIATELY after using yolk/whites.

  2. Allow to air dry and place in fridge.

  3. When you get several saved back, boil them in water for about 10 min to kill bacteria. (some egg may be left on the inside of the shell. It may collect on the surface of the boiling water and can be scooped out with a spoon).

  4. Once shells have been strained, allow them to fully air dry or place in oven on 220F for 30 minutes or until fully dried.

  5. Once fully dried, you can place in a mortar and pestle to grind or use an electric coffee grinder.

  6. Store in airtight container .

Things to use with your homemade egg powder:

  • Make a remineralizing toothpaste

  • sprinkle over your hens food to supplement their calcium intake

  • Use it in your garden or on your house plants (Did you know it can help prevent Rotted-blossom syndrome in tomatoes?)

  • Use it as a calcium supplementation for yourself or your pet (Ask your doctor or vet before supplementing).

So don't throw out those eggshells just yet!
